PHELPS, Ky. — A Pike County man wanted on fugitive warrants in West Virginia was arrested early Sunday morning, but not before compiling new charges in Kentucky.

A state trooper was patrolling around Phelps just before midnight on Saturday, when he saw Antonio Prater, 27, of Stopover, drive past. The officer knew Prater to be wanted and began to follow just in time to spot Prater turning onto Bones Branch.

When the trooper caught up to him, Prater was backing into a driveway. When Prater looked up and spotted the officer, he hit a building on the property, then jumped out of his vehicle and ran away, disregarding commands to stop. But as he fled one officer, he slid down a hill where a second state trooper was waiting and he was arrested.

Prater is now charged with fleeing police, criminal mischief and trespassing in Pike County.

He was wanted in West Virginia on warrants from two felony theft cases in Williamson.

He is currently being held without bond in the Pike County Detention Center, awaiting extradition to Mingo County.
