Pike man charged with shooting at police during and after chase

HURLEY, Va. — A Pike County man is facing a number of charges, following a chase and shootout with police in Virginia.

The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office says the suspect shot at deputies during the chase. After the driver crashed his car, police say he then held his passenger hostage while trading shots with officers.

Eventually, Joseph Rayburn, 42, of Burnwell, was taken into custody. He was charged with attempted murder of a police officer, abduction, use of a firearm during a felony, and numerous other charges.

Rayburn is also wanted in Pike County, for failing to appear in court on a gun charge.

No one was seriously injured in the incident.
