State recommends all school districts require face masks

FRANKFORT, Ky. — As school districts around the state prepare for a new school year, Kentucky is revising its recommendations regarding the use of face masks.

The Department for Public Health and Department of Education on Thursday issued updated guidance recommending that all school districts follow the CDC’s advice and require all students, teachers, staff and visitors to wear face masks while indoors, regardless of vaccination status.

Public Health Commissioner Dr. Steven Stack said the mask guidance is just part of the state’s list of recommendations for schools, which also include:

  • Vaccination for those 12 or older;
  • Masks for all persons while indoors;
  • Physical distancing of at least 3 feet;
  • Screening testing for unvaccinated individuals;
  • Ventilation;
  • Handwashing and facility disinfection; and
  • Isolation, quarantine and contact tracing.
