A Pike County man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison, following a 2020 incident when he fired a gun near a state trooper who had come to his house.

Police say Cory Whitehead, 35, of Pikeville, grabbed his gun when he saw the officer coming. The trooper also pulled his weapon and ordered Whitehead to drop his gun. Instead, he went for cover and the gun went off, causing the trooper to respond by firing his weapon, striking Whitehead in the hand.

Whitehead pleaded guilty first-degree wanton endangerment for firing his weapon, as well as felon in possession of a firearm, based on a previous robbery conviction.

He is now being held in the Pike County Detention Center, awaiting transfer to the state prison system.
