Suspect in W.Va. state trooper’s murder remains at large

MATEWAN, W.Va. — A West Virginia state trooper has been shot and killed, and a manhunt is underway for the suspect.

The search continues for Timothy Kennedy

The shooting happened Friday afternoon along Beech Creek Road. West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice later confirmed that Sgt. Cory Maynard died as a result.

Police say that Timothy Kennedy, 29, of Beech Creek, is their suspect. Police say he should be considered armed and dangerous.

According to Mingo County Emergency Management, police are actively searching the immediate area. They advise residents of the area to take shelter.

Anyone with information about Kennedy’s whereabouts is asked to call 911 or West Virginia State Police at (304) 235-6000.



Mingo Central High School had been scheduled to hold graduation exercises this evening. That ceremony has now been postponed until further notice as police secure the school. The Mingo County Board of Education said in a statement that students and guests should not go to the school.
