Tips for what to do after winter storm

Icicles on roof. Dangerous icing. Ice stalactites on the house. Poor maintenance of residential buildings in winter.

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — The snow has ended and we are beginning the slow climb from near-zero temperatures before the next round of winter weather arrives. During this break, the National Weather Service has some tips for what you need to be doing to recover from the past few days.

First, make sure to check your pipes to make sure they are not frozen. If they are, you can find tips for how to thaw them from the Kentucky Division of Water, or you may need to call a plumber, especially if any pipes have burst.

It is also important to shovel and salt sidewalks and driveways to prevent falls. Outdoor steps and stairs should also be salted, as less than a quarter-inch of ice can cause a fall.

It’s also a good idea to check on your neighbors, especially the elderly, the disabled and those living alone, to make sure they are OK. Carbon monoxide poisoning is one of the leading causes of death during periods of extreme cold.

And finally, take advantage of the break in the weather to restock groceries and other supplies you might need for the next round of winter weather.

We could experience more accumulating snow as soon as tomorrow night, and the next round of single-digit temperatures could arrive this weekend.
