PIKEVILLE, Ky. — A Pike County man employed by the fiscal court lost his job and was taken to jail, following a series of events while he was at work.

State troopers were called to the courthouse Monday, over a report that Andrew Thomas Smith, 22, of Virgie, had been growing progressively more violent.

The police report alleges Smith beat on things until his knuckles bled and also used a pry bar to stab a county truck multiple times, putting holes in the frame. The bed of the truck had to be replaced.

He also allegedly trapped and brought his neighbor’s cat to work. Workers said he asked them if anyone wanted a cat, before going outside and shooting it to death.

When Judge-Executive Ray Jones questioned Smith about the events, he allegedly admitted shooting and killing the cat. Jones said Smith also made threats to “blow [Jones’] and another coworker’s heads off and [have sex with] their wives.”

Smith is now being held in the Pike County jail on charges of first-degree criminal mischief, third-degree terroristic threatening and second-degree cruelty to animals. The criminal mischief charge is a felony, carrying a potential sentence of 1-to-5 years in prison.
