PMC first in region to offer groundbreaking eCoin therapy

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Pikeville Medical Center has announced that it is the first health care provider in the region and only the second in Kentucky to offer innovative eCoin therapy, a minimally invasive treatment to help patients with overactive bladder and urge urinary incontinence.

The eCoin device is implanted during a quick, in-office procedure that typically takes thirty minutes. Once implanted, the device automatically delivers gentle electrical stimulation to the tibial nerve, helping to regulate communication between the bladder and the brain and reducing symptoms associated with OAB.

OAB affects millions of Americans and can significantly affect quality of life through frequent urination, sudden urges to urinate and accidental leakage. eCoin therapy offers a convenient alternative to more invasive procedures and ongoing treatment regimens.

“We are excited to offer eCoin as a new treatment option,” said Urologist Dustin Gayheart, MD. “This innovative technology provides a simple, minimally invasive solution that will help patients spend less time worrying about their bladder and more time enjoying life.”

Urologist Mark J. Swofford, DO, added, “One of the things I find most exciting about eCoin is that a device no larger than a coin has the potential to significantly improve a patient’s quality of life.”

The eCoin device is indicated for patients with refractory urge urinary incontinence and is implanted using local anesthesia. Unlike other neuromodulation devices, the eCoin stimulates the posterior tibial nerve every two weeks without requiring patient input, recharging or a remote control. Patients interested in learning more about eCoin therapy or determining whether they may

be candidates for the procedure are encouraged to contact Pikeville Medical Center’s urology department at https://pmcky.org/urology/ or call (606) 430-2202.
