Deputies responded to McDowell ARH Hospital Friday evening, where they found the suspect, Jason Allen Martin, 48, of Wayland, and the two victims. The police report notes Martin was found lying on a bed in the hallway, while his mother was being checked for a serious injury to her head and her husband was waiting in the hall with a serious injury to his arm.

The mother told police Martin began beating her husband with the spade and she tried to intervene, which only caused him to turn his attention to her.

Both the mother and husband drove themselves to the hospital in separate cars, but Martin reportedly insisted on going with his mother.

Martin was arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree assault. That charge is a felony, punishable by 5-to-10 years in prison. He is being held in the Floyd County Detention Center on a 10-thousand dollar cash bond.
